This site is best viewed with Microsoft
Internet Explorer 4.0 and above at 800x600 with 24 bit colour. Higher
resolutions are supported. The site also runs on the latest versions
of Opera and Netscape Navigator browsers.
I maintain the site at 800x600 as I am aware that some people are
using laptop machines 'in the field' to access my site. I am also able
to produce a CD version if you need it.
The purpose of this site is to give an introduction to some of the
archaeology of the northern Cheviots and the Northumberland National
Park area. I hope to give some meaning and perspective to the lumps
and bumps in the ground and to the more spectacular evidence of the
past so easily accessed in the area. I originally became interested
in this subject totally by accident and when initially looking around
the internet for information I was surprised at how hard it was to
find. Some of the information was hidden on diverse sites, some sites
were full of archaeological jargon and some of the information I knew
to be simply incorrect (the Lanton monument and the 'Old Palace' at
Yeavering are always favourites here). The idea for this site was born
then.
I have tried to make the site visually interesting as possible. Keeping
the site as jargon free as I could without skimping on the detail was
also one of my aims. I have avoided the 'writing for broadband' approach
to site design and have optimised the site to load as quickly as possible
on the slower internet connections, not always an easy task when the
site relies heavily on images, diagrams and maps.
Feedback to the site is also welcome as it allows me to incorporate
the views, opinions and knowledge of others on these pages. This website
is always ready to adapt and accept new ideas. The feedback I have
had so far has been very positive and, it seems, the site has been
of use to visitors both before and after they have visited the area
and, I am proud to say that, the Gefrin website has even stimulated
visits to the area.
This site is not funded.
